2019 Chamber Choir Minnesota Music Educators Association Mid-winter Clinic Performance

The LPGE Chamber Choir auditioned to perform in the annual Minnesota Music Educators Association (MMEA) Mid-winter Clinic to be held in Minneapolis, MN. They received their acceptance in August and will performed on Friday, February 15th for the conference attendees alongside five other high school mixed choirs from across the state.

The Chamber Choir presented music that represented six different continents. They performed:

  • “Good Ale” by John Rutter - Western Europe
  • “Red River Valley” by Jeffrey Douma - North America
  • “La Lluvia” arranged by Stephen Hatfield - South America
  • “Al-yadil, yadil yadi” arranged by John Higgins - Middle East
  • “Hariyo Kharka ma” a Nepali hymn - South Asia
  • “Wa Milele” traditional Swahili hymn - Africa

The LPGE Secondary Choral Department also received a grant through the Five Wings Arts Council to complete an Artist Residency program in conjunction with this project. Those artists included: Dr. Therees Hibbard - St. Olaf College - coaching us in movement in choral singing, Lalo Quillo - Peruvian musician, Lisa Winter - piano accompanist, Prem Tamang - Nepali music, and Alpha Mbennah - Swahili language and movement.  The artists worked with the 7-12th grade choirs at LPGE this winter. As part of this program, the students studied world music to be able to aurally identify where a piece of music is from, experience how movement is a part of cultures’ music, and see how music is a part of a culture’s society.
